OUR BEGINNING

The YMCA of Calhoun County is a Christian organization emphasizing growth of each individual through development of the spirit, mind, and body.

Dr. C. Hal Cleveland was the first chairman of the Board of Directors. Dr. Cleveland was a staunch supporter of the YMCA and worked tirelessly to promote and develop the YMCA in Anniston. He led a community wide campaign in the late 1940s to raise funds for a new YMCA facility. The facility opened on August 3, 1952 at 14th Street and Gurney with a large gymnasium, meeting rooms, locker rooms for adults and youth, game lounge for youth and . In 1956 the indoor swimming pool was added for the community.

COMMITTED TO SERVE

Since its very beginnings, the YMCA of Calhoun County has been committed to serving the community through programs for everyone. Today the “Y” is operating facilities not only in Anniston, but also Oxford and Y Camp Hamilton just south of Jacksonville, Alabama.

The Anniston facility underwent extensive remodeling in 1973 and 1974. Additions of two racquetball courts, an indoor track, and renovations to the men and women’s locker rooms were included in the remodeling. As times change so has the YMCA in its offerings of relevant programs. Swimming lessons and other aquatic programs, fitness, and youth programs have been and continue to be the main vehicles of how the YMCA serves the Calhoun County area.

The YMCA of Calhoun County operates two “off site” after school programs in partnership with the Jacksonville City Schools and the Calhoun County Schools. Each program operates Monday through Friday at Kitty Stone Elementary and Alexandria Elementary, when school is in session. The primary purpose of these programs is to provide a safe haven for youth while parents are at work and also to assist parents to remain employed.

OXFORD Y FOR NOW

The YMCA opened its “Oxford Y For Now” with Mayor Leon Smith cutting the ribbon on January 15, 2008. The “Oxford Y For Now” is a temporary facility for Oxford area residents to enjoy while funds are being raised to construct a new state of the art facility. This temporary facility is located immediately across Hwy 21 South from the Oxford Wal Mart. It is a fully equipped fitness center with the latest, newest, equipment of any facility in the five county area. A fitness classroom is included and a wide range of fitness classes from the traditional aerobic class to belly dancing is currently offered in Oxford. We have changing rooms for males and females as well as a child watch area with scheduled babysitting available, free to members.

THANK YOU

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, please let us take just a few more seconds of your time to say thank you for being a part of the best human service organization in the world. We appreciate your participation at the YMCA of Calhoun County and our goal is to continue to provide relevant programs and services for you and yours.
